One of Yuen Biaos best!
I am very excited to see Dragon Dynasty release this! I would never have thought that there would ever be a great R1 release of Righting Wrongs. If I remember correctly this was the first time I had ever seen Rothrock, and I was blown away. It also featured a nice acting role by Yuen Kwai, with the great Wu Ma! This is a must watch for anyone who loves HK Martial Arts action! It also boots one superb final showdown !

A classic in modern martial arts cinema
Famed martial arts choreographer Cory Yuen (THE TRANSPORTER 1 & 2, X-MEN and ROMEO MUST DIE) directed this Hong Kong film that's loaded with bone-crushing stunts and masterful fight scenes with an assembled cast of martial arts masters from the East and West to cross paths.
ABOVE THE LAW (aka RIGHTING WRONGS) obtained a vigilante story with dark toned aspects that relies on police corruption and the righteous bending the law to seek their own justice. The stunning martial arts choreography by Cory Yuen kicks into high gear to help make this underrated cop-fu classic a gem in it's own right.
Acrobatic kung-fu genius Yuen Biao (ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA, SHANGHAI EXPRESS (aka MILLIONAIRE'S EXPRESS), THE PRODIGAL SON) plays a prosecutor who uses his own brand of justice when his client and entire family are murdered, and the mob boss (James Tien- Bruce Lee's FIST OF FURY, THE BIG BOSS and Jackie Chan's DRAGON FIST) responsible for their deaths is set free. When the boss is murdered, a beautiful police detective (played by 5-Time World Karate champion and weapons expert Cynthia Rothrock) goes out to arrest the killer who happens to be the lawyer, at least that's what everybody thinks until evidence reveals that the one behind the boss' murder is somewhere on the police force. The two are forced to team up and bend the law to catch the real killer in an all-out martial arts fight for their life.
Out of all the '80s era fight flicks I've seen Yuen Biao perform in, ABOVE THE LAW was one of his better efforts as an actor and screen fight performer. He was given plenty of room to do show off his remarkable stuntwork and martial arts mastery. He exchanges blows with undefeated kickboxing legend Peter "Sugarfoot" Cunningham in a (POLICE STORY-style) glass-shattering fight, he can be seen in one of his greatest challenges against Cynthia Rothrock in an engagement of traditional kung-fu, acrobatic fight moves and even brawling in hand-cuffs. Biao also has a Jackie Chan stunt moment where he uses his speed and flexibility to dodge speeding cars. These sequences were staged wonderfully by Cory Yuen and the legendary fight between Cynthia and Biao shows their similarities in timing and skill which makes their battle an all-time favorite. Karen Shepard, who's another skilled fighter from America and an expert in the mixed art form of Wun Hop Kuen Do kung fu, faces off against Cynthia with the lethal chain whip. Actor Melvin Wong (EASTERN CONDORS and DESCENDANT OF WING CHUN- the film referred in BULLETPROOF MONK "also choreographed by Cory Yuen") also unleashes his martial arts skills when he fights. The results of the stunning martial arts action earned the film a nomination for Best Action Choreography at the 1987 Hong Kong Film Awards.
Cynthia Rothrock, known as kung-fu's queen of action and a master in various forms of martial arts that include Tae Kwon Do, Wushu, Northern Shaolin kung-fu and Tang Soo Do, is a celebrated icon in the sport but unfortunately, she remains highly underrated like many other martial arts legends out there as far as the movies go. Her roles in countless American movies suffer from bad plots and choreography but her presence in Hong Kong films shine like Jackie Chan and Jet Li does internationally. Her capabilities in combat gives her the advantage over many of today's martial arts stars and it's disappointing that her films in the East didn't get the proper recognition in the West the way they should have a long time ago. Hopefully, that will come to an end with the new DVD treatment of ABOVE THE LAW, given by the Dragon Dynasty distribution label, will finally capture a wider audience and gain her the type of recognition she deserves as a star. For a film made in the '80s, ABOVE THE LAW was a great actioner in martial arts cinema, and all the skilled experts did a great job with their performance.
This film was also one of Cynthia and Biao's best performances in screen fighting during that era but the praise goes to Cory Yuen because of the right direction and his casting of martial arts action figures from both worlds to pull the strings. This film will remain a classic in the cinema of martial arts and an unforgettable clashing of two legends in the sport who deserve the proper recognition.

Stop it with these quotes on trailers
I hate trailers that quotes stamped on them. They ruin the experiance of watching a good trailer. They are annoying and distract.

My question is... what version of the film will be released by DD? Should I keep my dual sided DVD from HK as each side is a different verson?

Classic move...excellent DVD....
I have been waiting for the R1 release of Above the Law. Yuen Biao has always been one of my favorite martial arts actors, but has never rec'd the same world wide recognition that other's have. This movie is a perfect showcase for his martial arts talent and death defying stunt work. The DVD is great the picture and sound are beyond great for a movie this age. Also the extras are wonderful, all the interviews included are informative, interesting and importantly fun to listen to. Once again Dragon Dynasty you have proved you are willing to bring us the movies that we want along with extras that wouldn't have been available elsewhere.

More Cyntia Rothock Releases!
I remember getting this on Laser Disc years ago, followed by the first R1 release soon after(as Righting Wrongs). But this movie is so good, it'll be worth getting it a third time. Cynthia's fights with Karen Sheppard and Yuen Biao are some of the best out of Hong Kong. Hopefully this means more re-releases of Cynthia Rothrock's HK films. It'd be even better if they added new commentary tracks.

Would have been great
Without Cynthia Rothrock. Just my opinion, but that chick nearly ruined the movie for me. Aside from her fight with Yuen Biao and with that other woman, I found her character to be obnoxious and in the spotlight far too much. On a better note, Yuen Biao himself is amazing, and so are his three extended one on one fights. Despite a bit of cheese and a somewhat flat story, this movie really does have the fights to pull off a pretty good rating, I think. The extras are really nice, though I would have appreciated maybe a little something hightlighting some of those really dangerous stunts pulled in the movie. This film is a really good response to Jackie Chan's reign in the 80s. Check it out, I'd say. And apparently, everyone else likes Cynthia Rothrock, so whoever might be reading this has little to worry about.
Just beware of the fearsome 80s costuming...

Why is he not a star in the U.S.?
I've always thought that Yuen Biao should have been just as big here in the U.S. as Jackie Chan and Jet Li. This movie is just one more reason why. I've loved this film since first seeing it back when it was released on video in Hong Kong. It's great to see it finally get the release that it deserves here in America. Bravo!
